20 Book Cover Designers List for Self-Published Authors: Original, Stock, & Premade

S.R. Beaston
Crafty with words, wit, and wisdom, just add caffeine to make it more interesting.
When self-publishing, there are several steps to consider. Writing is no longer your only job. Luckily, there are companies and independent parties with the expertise to help you, like editors, designers, and artists. Let's talk about the most important marketing piece: the cover design.

What do Cover Designers do?

Cover designers design and create the front and back of your book cover. Self-published and indie authors are responsible for hiring their own designer, so there are plenty of companies and individuals ready to collaborate on a book cover with the author.
Every cover designer is different. It’s always in your best author-interest to shop around. Just like anything else in this industry, there can be scammers and overall unpleasant people to work with. Read the fine print and make sure you've found the right fit before signing any contracts.

Types of Cover Designers

Cover designers can fall into one of three main categories: original, stock, and premade.

What is an original cover design?

Original designs are exactly that, original to the artist. This allows for full control of your vision through the talent of the designer, starting from scratch and creating an original cover. This can be illustrative, photographic, or made with 3D modeling.

What is a stock cover design?

Stock designs are still very creative, but a good chunk of the design is built with images and illustrations from an existing library. These are called manips or stock manipulation, which can give a great image of what you want as an author while trimming costs.
Some stock items may be used in both Custom and Premade designs.

What is a premade cover design?

Premades are covers that are created in advance and set for sale by a designer with no prior knowledge of your story or desires. Authors can browse libraries of premade covers for different genres to find a suitable option. Upon purchase, the designer will swap out the stand-in title and name for yours, then you're good to go. Typically, that is the only change that will be made for you. Premades can be a great, quality budget option.

Should I Design My Own Book Cover?

With a world of information and resources at our fingertips, DIY is a viable option for nearly anything. Cover design could be a skill worth honing, but keep in mind that your cover is a huge marketing tool and the biggest barrier to buyers choosing your book. That said, if you're interested in learning more about designing your own cover, check out this video first!

They send multiple unique cover options (based on your book pitch) for you to choose from before they get down to the details and edits.
Word of caution: While many writers have had great experiences with Damonza, one of our own writers lost several hundred dollars of a deposit when Damonza simply stopped responding to their emails before the design had even begun. This seems like an outlier experience, but we did want to mention it.
