Living in a really small town most of my life, I was never excited to use the library to get books. They simply didn’t have the resources to have much I would enjoy. When I moved, I learned just how much libraries could hold. By that time, however, subscriptions to entertainment were growing in popularity.
Movies, games, shows, podcasts, and music could all be streamed with a small subscription fee, making it easy to take in more entertainment and discover new tastes with a click of a button. It was only natural an online library would follow. Let’s take a look at Kindle Unlimited.
What is Kindle Unlimited?
Kindle Unlimited is an Amazon subscription service that gives you access to thousands of books, audiobooks, magazines, and comics. All material of the KU library is fully accessible the moment you sign up.
Kindle Unlimited for readers
Kindle Unlimited contains a great variety of genres and authors that you may not find in other places. Though it may not contain the latest break-out traditional best seller, it is a great way to discover hidden gems, older releases, and allow easy access to genres you may be interested to try.
You can ‘rent’ up to twenty books at a time, with the ability to swap the books in your personal library at any time with no limit.
You do not need to have a kindle device to use the service. You can read your books on your PC through a browser or download the phone app for access on the go. I must say something like a $ Paperwhite$ is much easier on the eyes.
How to sign up for Kindle Unlimited
$ Click here$ or go to Amazon and select Kindle E-readers & books under the All tab, then select Kindle Unlimited. You can pay the subscription of $11.99 USD per month for access to unlimited reading and listening. There is usually a discount or free trial for the first one to three months, so there’s no risk to trying it out! (Unless you are like me and forget what you’ve subscribed to.)
It’s important to note that this service comes separate from amazon prime, which also has a service for books but is much more limited than, well, kindle unlimited.
Kindle Unlimited for Writers
Kindle Unlimited is one of the more accessible ways for indie authors to publish their works. Readers are more likely to come across indie authors and give their book a chance if they don’t have to pay full price for the book.
This can be a decent start to building readership and visibility. Marketing is easier when the book can be readily available.
Financially speaking, there has been some debate on the worth of putting your book on Kindle Unlimited. Of course, it’s up to the author to determine if this is the right path for them.
How to list your book on Kindle Unlimited
Once you have a book listed in KDP, go to your bookshelf. Next to the eBook you wish to list, click the ellipsis under the kindle eBook Actions menu and select Enroll in KDP Select.
Once your book has been enrolled, it will immediately be included in the Kindle Unlimited library for anyone to access.
